The news that Blossoms, the great white hopes of the British Indie/Pop/Rock scene are due to support the nations favourite puppet Robbie Williams this month came as something surprise here at Splashlands. Granted they were always firmly on the mainstream side of leftfield but supporting the fat dancer????
To me Blossoms have everything, a brilliant debut album, killer singles, stunning live shows and to top it off they actually look like a band. Far too many bands these days look like people I would expect to be issuing me with a fine for the late return of my library book or teaching my children Geography. I want my rock stars to look like rock stars thank you, Marc Bolan, Jimmy Page, Debbie Harry.
I have always had the feeling that Blossoms are being very cleverly managed, playing venues too small for them and not rushing the debut album and maybe this is no more than an attempt to push them well and truly into the mainstream market. BUT!!! BUT!!! Just maybe, this is an absolute genius stroke. A return to an age where we had bands who were unashamedly pop bands that actually produced fine songs. Think Slade, T-Rex, ABBA, The Beatles even. Brilliant brilliant bands who were, well…….just dead good. I can’t remember the last truly great pop band we had in this country, there have been plenty of Indie/Rock bands who have crossed into the mainstream and shifted shit loads of records whilst selling out stadiums and a few pop bands who were empty headed enough to be harmless but a good pop band?
This is going to be interesting to see how this plays out one way or another, Blossoms are going to be huge.
